Setting the Trend/Constructing the Uniqueness Founded in 1966, Tungfang Design University is the only university of higher education that focuses on design. Based on the educational subject of “design aesthetics” and “international vision”, it aims at nurturing students to become the leaders of international design professionals. Thus, it is essential for every student to take courses like Design Aesthetics and Life, Fashion Design and etc. Beginning with the emphasis on developing the five senses, it tries to improve students’ sensitivity in beauty and taste as well as their soft power. Currently, our university offers a variety of degrees to meet students’ different needs, including Ph. D in creative cultural design, Master Degrees in creative cultural design, arts and crafts design, integrated interior design and fashion design along with Bachelor Degrees in 4-year technological program and in 5-year junior college. In addition, the continuing education department provides students with a multitude of choices of pursuing further education through specifically scheduled classes within the institute and 4-year technological program, as well as in 2-year technological program and in 2-year junior college. Teachers and Students’ Prominences/Optimism and Confidence With the unlimited potential of the creative culture in Taiwan, and with Tungfang’s clear position in design, our school has cooperated with a variety of companies such as JHT Creative Company, Li Pharmaceutical Group, Taiwan Craft Research and Development Center and other important cross-strait corporations of industry and enterprise. Also, Tungfang Design University has been ranked “Excellent Technology Unit of Cooperation of Industry and Education” for three consecutive times. Through “Tungfang Spotlight”, an on-campus business platform, combined with successful business companies, Tungfang provides students with a workplace to do practicum on campus. In so doing, Tungfang not only builds a bridge between students and enterprises, but it also enhances teaching proficiency and nurtures cultural and creative designers in Taiwan. Workshop Teaching/Excellent Production and Precise Learning Adopting “Workshop teaching” and emphasizing the practical spirit of “doing in learning, learning in doing,” Tungfang Design University supplies a large number of industrial experts to do team teaching to enable students to experience the workplace earlier for integrating with industry smoothly. This makes the “last mile” no longer just a slogan but makes students full of “competitive ability” and confidence of obtaining employment. Future Development On the basis of the educational ideas, “Three Qualities and Five Creativities”, our school was renamed “Tungfang Design University”. Namely, the three qualities are to build brand quality, innovate quality and guarantee quality. The five creativities are to create arts—establish art models, create differences—integrate different opinions and ideas, create benefits—increase interest and efficiency, create meanings—propose new concepts and new ideas and create memories—produce everlasting visions. Positioning itself as “Tungfang of Creation, Navigation of Design”, it aims to educate students as professionals with “humanities” and “personalities” as the educational goals. The target of capacities includes design and innovation, practice in special issues, culture, science, macroscopic pragmatism, altruistic service, information and technology, alongside creativity and design. Its final vision is to establish a unique and fine university.
