The sixth International Design Masters Lecture Series in 2022 was held online and streamed live on TISDC’s official YouTube channel, allowing design lovers to join us whichever way! Topics of the lectures starting out with the 17 goals of the SDGs along with the continuation of this year’s theme-One World, we’ve invited three professional designers as our lecturers, including Mr. Ben Schwarz from Germany, Professor Youl Cho from Korea, and Mr. Chris Armsden from United Kingdom. The International Design Masters Lecture Series started with project director Mr. Lin’s welcome speech followed by the address from Mr. Liu, the director of National Library of Public Information.

First of all, Mr. Ben Schwarz, co-founder and design director at Manta Sleep, shared his experience by the topic of “Opportunities for Product Designers in a Fully Connected World“. By chance, he came to Taiwan and started his own business. The director mentioned that the current generation is exciting for product design, especially for designers. There are many new challenges and problems facing the world, including the epidemic, war and global warming etc.; However, there are also some new concepts in this generation, with new opportunities. Through remote work and the metaverse, director Ben tells us what other possibilities are there for young designers outside the traditional path and how to find new design ideas.

Secondly, Professor Youl Cho, currently a visiting Professor at National Taiwan University of Arts with the theme of “University Design Education: Using the Principle of Anamorphosis” to share the visual art of Anamorphosis beyond the plane, not only using specular reflection, but also using perception as an example.  He introduced many visual or scientific designs of the anamorphic principle, including many of Professor Zhao’s large-scale and well-known works: the audience holding placards at the opening venue of the 1988 Seoul Olympics.

Last but not least, founder of Rising Star Creative, Mr. Chris Armsden, shared his lecture: “Connecting One World through Animation.” The designer proposed that animation is to present life in a different way, carefully observe every little detail of life, and through animations, it can attract the audience’s attention, generate connection and eventually the audience will pay attention to the issue. However, it is not enough by just knowing the issue, we should think deeper on how to empathize with the issue and make a change. In Chris’s speech, we may be able to find some answers and resonance.
