Organized by the Ministry of Education and being the largest-scale global design contest for students, 2022 Taiwan International Student Design Competition will hold its award ceremony at Eslite Performance Hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park on November 29. In this year’s edition, Taiwanese students perform brilliantly, winning a total of 43 prizes, including the grand prix and the gold prizes of all three categories of Product Design, Visual Design and Digital Animation. Such an excellent result stands out at the international level and demonstrates the abundant energy for creativity and design of the students.

Marking the 15th anniversary this year, Taiwan International Student Design Competition has been widely recognized by the global design community as being both prestigious and credible and has served as the best example of the Ministry of Education’s success in promoting design education. The theme of this year’s edition, One World, resonates with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the United Nations and emphasizes the core spirit of the world as one family towards global sustainability. Students are expected to have the courage to face and reflect on issues related to sustainability, incorporate the concepts of the SDGs into their works, and fulfill their responsibilities as global citizens

This year, a total of 16,749 participating entries come from 867 school departments of 66 countries/regions. The composition of the jury panel is highly international. During the preliminary selection, 587 works were shortlisted by 112 professionals from 31 countries around the world; as for the final selection, the jury panel with 28 nationalities further picked 77 works as winners. The low finalist rate of 3.6% and the even lower winning rate of 0.4% highlight the preciousness of the winning entries.

In total, 77 entries have stood out and won the following prizes: 1 grand prix of the year and 1 gold, 1 silver, 3 bronzes, and 12 honorable mentions for each category (financed by the Ministry of Education); 22 international design association special prizes (jointly sponsored by iSee Taiwan Foundation and Sayling Wen Cultural & Educational Foundation); 3 Environmental Sustainability Award prizes (established by TPCA Environment Foundation).

The coveted grand prix is won by “Outlaw,” an animation created by Hao-Yang Peng, Yu-Ching Ling, Chia-Shan Liu, Yung-Hua Lu and Yu-Hua Yang from National Taiwan University of Arts. Telling a story about a pregnant woman hiding a secret and evading the police, this work demonstrates engaging narrative and drawing styles with just the right emotions and rhythm. Highly praised by the jurors as a mature piece of work with good quality, this animation wins the grand prix along with 400,000 NTD.

The gold prize of the Product Design category goes to “NGTF,” created by Shih-Hsuan Chiu from National Taiwan University of Science and Technology. This is a friendly force-feeder kit that includes internal and external nasogastric tubes, a feeding rack, nutrients in foil packages and a liquid aspirator, and the kit is easy to carry and can thus reduce the inconvenience of eating out for patients. The jurors unanimously acclaim the high completeness of the product’s appearance, functions, details and branding, which can address the current pain points in the feeding process and find a more dignified way to care for patients.

The gold prize of the Visual Design category goes to “WILD VEGETABLES’,” created by Shu-Qi Yang, Ling-Ci Zhang, Tsai-Tzu Hsiao, Pin- Xuan Lin and Yu-Pei Chang from Chaoyang University of Technology. This work aims to promote the indigenous vegetables in Taiwan by designing “planting packages” with handmade seeded paper and paper-folded pots and by presenting, with both texts and images, seven harsh environments of climate change and the characteristics of 21 indigenous vegetables. The jury panel praises its meticulous layout and clear classification, which make this work refreshingly creative in terms of both visual and packaging design.

The gold prize of the Digital Animation category goes to “Ant Hotel,” created by Yu-Hsuan Teng, Jia-Jia Chang, Yu-Chien Chen, Ci-Syuan Chen and Ming-Hsuan Lin from National Taiwan University of Arts. Using the ants in a hotel as the symbol of human desire, this animation peeks at the story of each hotel occupant regarding human nature. The jury panel points out that this work boldly copes with a dark topic, while the suspense in its story plot brings a strong aftertaste, hence the decision of awarding it the gold prize.

The winner list of this year’s edition has been released on the official website of 2022 Taiwan International Student Design Competition (www.tisdc.org), and the award ceremony and the exhibition of the winning works will take place on November 29 at Eslite Performance Hall in Songshan Cultural and Creative Park (address: B1, No. 88, Yanchang Road, Xinyi District, Taipei City). After being held in Taipei, the exhibition will move to National Library of Public Information in Taichung (address: No. 100, Wuquan South Road, South District, Taichung City) between December 6 and December 15, 2022. You are welcome to have a visit.
